Clean Beauty Guru Indie Lee’s Journey to Wellness: From Skin Health to Hydration

My path to clean living began when I decided to take time away to live a simpler life in the country with my kids, after working in corporate America for years. As a type “A” personality, “simpler,” I realized, is simply not in my DNA. With my newfound time and energy, I quickly built a 750 sq. ft. greenhouse and jumped into the farm-to-table movement, helping local businesses with starter plants and schools with gardens.

In 2008, I was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis and could not work in the greenhouse any longer. Suddenly, I had loads of Calendula and Lavender, and nothing to do with them. I decided to make products for my sister’s baby shower to ensure only the best and healthiest skincare for my little nephew. Needless to say, I ended up making products for not just my sister and nephew, but for all of her guests. The products were a hit – but at that point, it was just for fun.

Shortly thereafter, I was diagnosed with a brain tumor that doctors believed could be environmentally derived. I was shocked to learn that the cause of my tumor was potentially from what I was putting into and onto my body. Who would have thought that my love of lotions and potions may have given me only 6 months or so to live? But I wasn’t going to give up; I underwent a successful surgery on Earth Day 2009, and woke up with a new lease on life.

At the time of my diagnosis, there weren’t many green skincare brands on the market, outside of the typical, uninspiring products sold at natural food stores. I started researching clean, safe, toxin-free ingredients that were as efficacious as the ingredients found in conventional beauty products. I understood then that I was destined to create change through products that people could love and trust, and Indie Lee, the eponymous skincare line, was born directly from my greenhouse.

I also took the time to learn more about what I was eating and drinking. When I discovered Icelandic Glacial, I instantly felt a connection to the brand. The water itself is super pure and has a naturally high alkaline pH of 8.4. I also love that their operation is sustainable, maintains a net-zero carbon footprint and makes BPA-free and PET safe packaging. Not only does it keep me hydrated throughout the day, I know I’m contributing to a more sustainable planet by supporting a company with eco-friendly values and practices. Icelandic Glacial is a product I love sharing with others in their quest to live a better, healthier life. What you put into your body is of prime importance, and when I drink Icelandic Glacial, I can be rest assured that I’m helping my body stay hydrated and balanced with each sip.

After conquering a life threatening brain tumor that pointed to environmental toxins as the culprit, lndie Lee awoke on April 22, 2009 with the passion to create a chic and eco-friendly namesake collection.

At Indie Lee, we aim to give everyone the information to make healthier choices, as it relates to their beauty regimens and overall lifestyles. Best of all, you never have to sacrifice efficacy or style.

On Becoming Carbon Neutral with Icelandic Glacial Chairman & Co-Founder, Jon Olafsson

I am often asked how Icelandic Glacial came to be certified as Carbon Neutral for both product and operation – an unprecedented move in the beverage industry. Growing up in Iceland, where environmental conservation is a priority to its people, has shaped the way I live my life both personally and professionally. We take great pride in running an environmentally friendly company, and since 2007, Icelandic Glacial has worked with The CarbonNeutral® Company, a leading carbon emissions consultant to maintain a net-zero carbon footprint. The CarbonNeutral Company independently calculates and verifies our carbon footprint and then works closely with us to offset any remaining carbon emissions.

Under the guidance of The CarbonNeutral Company, Icelandic Glacial takes several steps to leave the smallest carbon footprint possible.

  • Our sustainable operation is fueled entirely by geothermal and hydroelectric power.
  • Our packaging is 100% recyclable and our bottles are BPA-free made from recycled rPET plastic.
  • We utilize otherwise empty cargo space on vessels returning to the United States and other parts of Europe as the most efficient means of shipping.

To offset any remaining net carbon emissions, we invest in bona fide renewable energy projects worldwide. Currently, we are investing in the following:

Chengshan Wind Power project (China)

Improved Mexican Cookstoves (Mexico)

Seneca Meadows Landfill project (USA)

We are committed to sharing our water with the world with minimal environmental impact and will continue to work closely with The CarbonNeutral Company in the years to come.

Spring into Beauty with Lavenda Memory

Lavenda’s Closet is a fashion and lifestyle blog written by Latina mama, Lavenda Memory, and features personal style posts, reviews of current fashion, beauty, and home design trends. The blog highlights real-life women’s interest issues from a blogger’s thoughtful perspective.

Water plays an incredible role in our daily lives. A major contributor towards beautiful skin, healthy muscles and fierce brain power makes the source of our water of highest priority and concern. Years ago I considered installing water purifiers throughout my home to alter the pH balance of our tap water. After a lot of research I realized this was not financially possible at the time, so we opted for a basic filter that just went over our kitchen tap. Years later we invested in a water cooler that offers us fresh drinking for our daily consumption; so you can imagine how serious I am about my water source.

This year I discovered a hidden gem of the water world- Icelandic Glacial. Icelandic Glacial can be found at many grocery stores so chances are you’ve already seen it on the shelves. If you can’t remember quite at first- you may recognize it from its distinct mountaintop bottle design. What makes this water so unique and quite the rockstar amongst its competitors is its exclusive source: the Ölfus Spring.

The legendary Ölfus Spring was forged during a massive volcanic eruption over 5,000 years ago, which continues to replenish itself through natural rainfall. This pure spring water flows directly into the Icelandic Glacial bottling plant located right at the source, in Hlidarendi, Iceland at the edge of the spring. All of this wonderful, untouched water is then carefully bottled up to offer us what we know of as Icelandic Glacial water.

For those concerned about drinking from water bottles (raising my hand here) you can rest easier knowing that Icelandic Glacial has made a commitment to assess their CO2 emissions, with a promise to continually reduce them wherever possible. Their company prides themselves on their environmental efforts and have such won the 2007 Bottled Water World Design Awards for Best Sustainability Initiative. In fact, they were the world’s first bottled water certified as CarbonNeutral® for both product and operation.

Trusting the company to do their part, I am only left with the responsibility to enjoy the fresh taste and pure benefits of a uniquely pure water source. This offers a lot of relief when I’m traveling and need to pack a water bottle (there’s not always enough time to fill aluminum bottles) to take with me on the go.

Staying hydrated leads to a healthier immune system which will aid in combatting colds and preventing certain illnesses. Taking in your 8 glasses a day will also help rejuvenate your skin cells, offering a healthy, hydrated glow. This is helpful for me as a blogger, when I’m often being photographed or filmed. A filter can only do so much, you know.

Overall, I am quite impressed with not only the distinct water source that remains untouched and still so pure, but also the careful consideration Icelandic Glacial takes in producing such a quality product. I can rest easy on my busiest days when I reach for a bottle of Icelandic Glacial, knowing the full impact and story behind the water I carry with me.

Finding Health & Happiness with ShutTheKaleUp

My name is Jeannette Ogden and I live in Orange County, CA with my husband and my little guy, Elliott Grey. It was about five years ago that I first became interested in health and fitness. I became intrigued by it all so quickly and pursued it to the fullest because leading a healthy, balanced life was all I ever wanted after struggling with an eating disorder. During that time, I got laid off from a stressful job I wasn't ever going to leave, and it all changed. It was like a weight had been lifted from my shoulders and I was HAPPY. I got to do some things I had wanted to do for a long time like, take a teacher training yoga class and plan my wedding which was happening a few short months after. When my husband and I got married, it was like my eating disorder no longer existed and I had finally found balance. I loved cooking and being in my new kitchen. Shortly after, shutthekaleup was born! I never expected my Instagram account to reach many people, but it did and I'm so grateful to be able to share health tips, my go-tos, recipes and a part of my life.

This year, my family and I have decided to focus on a non-toxic lifestyle. Little by little, we'll be replacing household items such as personal hygiene products to pots and pans with non-toxic, environmentally friendly versions. I know it's a whole lot of change, but we already lead a healthy lifestyle so it's something we feel like we need to do to better our way of living. I got inspired by the way we eat, all organic, pasture-raised, grass-fed, local, etc. I'm also wanting to better mine and my family's life since we have our boy, Elliott to look after.

Besides eating well, drinking pure, quality water is important. Having a bottle with me at all times makes me drink more, and being that I'm a breastfeeding mama, my hydration has to be on point. Nowadays, there's a huge selection of water brands, and before committing, I like to do my research. That's when I heard about Icelandic Glacial and how they were the world's FIRST bottled water certified as CarbonNeutral. The water is also incredibly pure, and naturally alkaline! You just can't go wrong!

It's the sweetest thing to be in such a loving community of people who have the same interests and way of living. I love how people can come together from all over the world and geek out on health food like I do. It's crazy how social media has created a place to go if you want inspiration on what to cook, wear or even how to decorate your home! I’d love to hear your tips and tricks for living a non-toxic lifestyle! Feel free to touch base with me through message or comment on Instagram!
